Addiction

Hey:

Well after another unsuccessful week (in my head) I must say that my addiction to food sucks. Something needs to change....something has got to give. I have some ideas about how to jump start the lifestyle change I want so badly.

--look into seeing a dietitian offered through ISU since those types of services are offered to faculty and staff

--start journaling on a daily basis so I can track my eating habits, emotions, exercise, etc.

--join Weight Watchers so I have more accountability

--plan out my menus for EVERY day of the week

I know Weight Watchers hasn't been a success for me in the past. But I do know that 1-2 months of the program has always been success for me and is a good jump start to curbing my portions and dropping a little bit of weight. I usually fall off the wagon around 16 weeks in the program.

I'm nervous about contacting a dietitian due to my profession and education. I hate the thought of being judged.

I think creating menus (therefore shopping in a structured manner) and journaling will give me the organization I need at home. It's become obvious that my disorganization with meals and shopping leads to spontaneous, impulsive decisions that typically aren't healthy. Those decisions may lead to delicious food but it's not contributing to the goals I want to accomplish. I've felt out of control lately. I'm sick of feeling that way.

Yay me!

Not to toot my own horn but I thought I'd share my victory of the day with you. Today, I knew that I needed to work out. I didn't want to work out but that wasn't really an option. I had my workout written in my planner and was trying to ignore it, but I didn't! I was supposed to do 35 minutes but, because I was being lazy I did 45 instead! Yay me! I didn't cure world hunger or anything but I was happy with my discipline.

2 other quick thoughts:

-the spinach, ricotta tortelini from Barilla is AMAZING!

-my friend Chris and I are going to try out a new church on Sunday. I was reading the description and it sounds like a really good fit. I can't wait.

OK, that's it. Have a wonderful Friday ladies!

Great news!

Happy Wednesday ladies! What a beautiful day today. Driving into work was like driving through a winter wonderland! We haven't really had a serious snowfall yet this year so the 8 or so inches we got last night were great! I probably wouldn't be so happy, however, the snow stopped before I was out this morning and the roads were clear so my drive in wasn't bad at all. Not to mention I got in a 25 minute workout this morning just shoveling out my car!

The week has been going well. I got in a really good workout Monday night and have have been eating really well. I did make a discovery last night though. I do not like to eat frozen broccoli on it's own. If it's in a dish of sorts it's not so bad, but I've tried a few of the broccoli steamers and I just do not like them. I even tried the one with cheese last night and had to force it down. I think in the future I'm going to have to stick with either raw or start taking the time to prepare and steam fresh broccoli if I want to eat it. I'm actually really excited for dinner tonight. My sister and I decided that tonight was going to be our seafood night. She is making a crab meat lasagna and I have decided to make a shrimp and pasta dish with mushrooms and tomatoes. Normally I just use WW penne but I was in the pasta aisle at the store the other day and saw that Barilla has their cheese tortellini. I was going to get the 3 cheese but then I saw that they had ricotta and spinach so I picked that up and will give it a try tonight.

OK, enough about me. I told you that I have some good news and now I'll share it. My friend Chris, the one who found out last week that she has colon cancer (I might not have told you that LeAnn)had her CT yesterday. She found out this morning that it has not spread!!! She also was told that the form she has in not a fast spreading cancer! These are some really great pieces of news for her. She still hasn't met with her oncologist yet so the final details are still not in but this was a really good way to start her week! Ideally they'll be able to remove the mass in her colon within the month and then she'll start her follow-up treatment, whatever that may be, after! I just keep praying that she's going to be alright!

Alright, I should find something to do. Have a great day ladies!

My thoughts on Super Bowl 44

Hey ladies. I hope that you are having a safe Monday amidst the blizzard in the Midwest. It was a sunny, cool day here but it was the calm before the storm. Our snow is supposed to start tomorrow morning and dump 6-18 inches on us. I'm really hoping for something closer to 6 but I don't know if we'll get that lucky. I had a decent weekend. I did some shopping on Saturday and then spent the day cleaning my apartment. Sunday was spent playing with my new sewing machine and watching the Super Bowl. I could talk about eating and exercising and all but I'd rather just share my thoughts on this years Super Bowl with you! Enjoy!!

1. This was perhaps the best SB that I've seen in a long time. I don't remember enjoying a SB this much in quite some time, maybe ever. I think part of the reason is that Sean Payton was playing fearlessly, he may be the personification of 'no guts no glory.' He made some really risky calls that I don't think many coaches would have and it was AWESOME to watch. Peter King called him cocky, he might be right but damn that made for some good football!

2. When I worked at McDonald's I hated it when there were paw prints (finger prints) on the doors and windows. I don't have many OCD tendencies but you get finger prints on shiny things and I want to scream. Last night I wanted to throw things at the TV when they were passing around the Vince Lombardi trophy...all those finger prints!

3. The Saint's win last night must have been bittersweet not only for Peyton Manning but the entire Manning family. While the Colts didn't win, they have serious ties to the city of N.O. as it's their hometown and the Saint's franchise (Archie Manning's team when he was in the NFL).

4. It's a damn good thing the city of New Orleans decided to close the city today. Nobody would be sober enough to work!

5. Keep the Gatorade closer to the coach near the end of the game. I didn't think those guys were ever going to get to Sean Payton at the end of the game. They did get him though and they got him good!

6. Drew Brees...wow! I remember feeling really bad for Drew when he was drafted. The Giants nabbed him but they didn't want him. Now look at him. Super Bowl MVP. He set an NFL record for single season pass completion. Did you see how amazingly adorable he was with his son after the game??? What an amazing moment to share with him!

7. Why don't they do onside kicks more often??? How amazing was that?!?!? If you watched the game you know what it was like so I won't go into all of the details but I do want to say this. How much would it suck to have been Reis on the bottom with the ball? 90 seconds he was down there...NINETY!!!

8. Did you know that Saint's kicker Morstead had never kicked or practiced an onside kick prior to 12 days before the Super Bowl? Quite possibly my favorite quote of the the day. In a post game interview Morstead commented on his nerves prior to the onside kick, and I quote: 'I wasn't nervous...I was terrified!' It takes a real man to admit that!

9. I HATE Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson!!! Because of them and their ridiculous 'wardrobe malfunction' we will never get halftime entertainment where the members of the band are not collecting social security. I like The Who as much as the next person but they are so irrelevant in today's popular culture. I'm sure many modern acts would LOVE to perform at halftime.

10. The commercials last night were just eh. Here are a few thougths on the commercials to wrap up my Super Bowl 44 thoughts:

-The green police were AMAZING!

-I hate the e-trade commercials with the babies. However, when they called the one girl a dumb milkaholic, I lol'd!

-The Doritos commercials were, on the whole, incredibly stupid.

-Dodge, the only American car company to have a SB ad did a very good job in the one commercial that they purchased.

-Did you notice that Pepsi didn't have any commercials last night? Instead of buying air time, Pepsi co. decided to take the money that they would be spending and, through an online campaign, donate it to community improvement projects throughout the country. Good for them I say. Pepsi normally has about 1000 commercials during the SB and now that money will be put to really good use!

OK, sorry if that was boring or disorganized but the thoughts were just wandering around my head so I thought I'd share them with you! Have a great week ladies!

Holy Cow....is it Friday yet?

Hey Ladies:

Well I'm pleased to say I had an active day. No, I didn't hop on my treadmill this morning but the nature of my work kept me busy. One of my classes is learning how to teach volleyball in a PE setting so we took the day to play the game and figure out what common mistakes occur. I decided to play too and wow...it was actually quite a work out (we only had 4 students on each team). Playing in jeans bites though, I was quite warm after just one game. I typically assume I will be a less than average player but I played really well today...especially with serving. Serving is usually my worst volleyball skill. I was very warm and sweaty but felt great after that class ended.

My after school program was a very active experience too since we had students rotating through gymnastic stations. My stress level was elevated when our swimming lesson started though. The department hired a lifeguard for me since that is a requirement for pool use. Supposedly she is one of the most responsible lifeguards but she didn't show up tonight. Luckily one of my employees has a current lifeguard certification but it was an issue not having him in the pool teaching. He's supposed to co-teach our intermediate swimming group with another teacher since the group is so large. We have lots of parents watching during swimming lesson time so I didn't like how chaotic things looked because of the lifeguard being AWOL.

After the program ended, my body just felt awful. My feet were killing me, I was soooo thirsty, and I just wanted to collapse. I still feel pretty wore out even though I slept a little bit earlier. I do not think my feet have ever hurt so bad in my life. I need new shoes and I need to drop weight to alleviate the pain too. I keep telling myself that I'll adjust to my workload but I tell you what...I'm not sure I can totally adjust to having to be so busy each day. It's crazy! I am starting to understand why my professor seemed disorganized...she had so much to multitask and complete each day.

Hope your week is ending well!

Oh good Lord...

So I was at work this morning and while I was waiting for some Holter studies to download I was checking one of the news websites that I frequent most days. This particular site focuses on the more obscure, random, and sometimes unbelievable stories that you won't find on CNN, FOX, BBC ect. Anyway, I was reading through the headlines and something caught my eye. You'll have to check out the link to get the full effect but the gist of the story is that Miley Cyrus' 9-year old sister is going to be designing a lingere line for kids. Yep...that's right. Peophiles the world over will be rejoicing now that they can see little girls in clothes that adult women shouldn't be wearing in public. I just could not believe what I was reading. You have to check out the photos of this little girl. I haven't watched the videos yet because I'm just a little bit scared :( Anyway, I had to share this with you and leave you with one final thought. What the hell is wrong with Billy Ray Cyrus?!?!?

Fresh start Monday...

I guess it's Tuesday now-

Hey ladies! I just have to say that I'm starting over and recovering from an average week followed by a really bad weekend. Last week was pretty neutral for my fitness goals. I was OK with my eating habits and OK with my exercising. My weekend, however, was not great. With the exception of my lunch with my friend Chris on Saturday my eating was garbage. More correctly, I was eating garbage. I felt so miserable on Sunday night that I knew I had been bad. It's quite surprising how quickly your body becomes accustomed to eating well. I had only been really serious about eating well for 2 weeks and as soon as I lapsed my stomach was pissed. As sad as that made me, you have to believe that it was great motivation to stick to the straight and narrow. I've probably mentioned it before but I'm going to repeat it regardless, I never feel bad/sick after eating when I eat well. EVER. Yes, if I over eat I still feel that overly full feeling but I'm never sick and feeling like I need to throw-up. I think that's a sign. Anyway, my goal this week is to get back on track with my eating. I have a menu in place and I am going to stick with it.

I also was pretty sedate this weekend. Partially because it was really cold this weekend and I didn't want to go out any more than I had to and partly because I spent all day Saturday with Chris working on crochet patterns...I know, what a wild life I lead. I'm the kind of person that when I get into something it sort of takes over my life for a while. As such, I spent most of Saturday evening and a great deal of Sunday working on the blanket that I'm making for a friend's baby and practicing basic knitting...yes, I pseudo taught myself how to knit as well :) Between that and cleaning and laundry my day was shot. Oh well, sometimes that happens. So, after a weekend of lazying I am going to focus on getting back to work.

Speaking of exercise, I totally got my new shoes in the mail yesterday! I needed new shoes for the treadmill and was looking online and found a really fun pair. I never buy women's shoes because I'm really a 12.5 in size...12's hurt my toes and in 13's I move around all over the place. I'm always sad that I can't wear women's athletic shoes because they are so much more fun than men's. However, while perusing Eastbay I found a pair of silver and pink Mizuno shoes. And they run a half-size small!! I got the 13's and they fit really, really well! I'm going to break them in for a few days before I work out in them but I can't wait to try them out! Not to mention I'm thrilled that I get cute pink shoes (judge me if you must)!

OK, I have to stop now and start working. Have a great day and I'll chat with you all later!!
