8 pounds!

Howdy:

Once again I'm on a time constraint so hopefully I can write a quality entry before my 2:10pm class. It pays to be organized...I'm running about half an hour fast today thanks to prep work. I'm a little bummed about today's schedule because I have a meeting in Ankeny I forgot about. I have to hang out there from 5:30-8pm for an adjunct meeting. I'm hoping it's like meetings in the past and ends well before 8pm. At least I get paid for it...my checking account likes that.

First and foremost....I lost 8 pounds last week! I was aiming for a 3 pound loss but won't complain about the extra 5. I'm not too hung up on the awards they give at Weight Watchers but since I lost 5, I got one already. They give them for every 5 pounds lost. You also get them when you lose 5% and 10% of your body weight. You have to give an example of what is helping you lose weight so I mentioned the AP on my smart phone. It really did help me track and lessened my snacking at night.

I did indulge a little bit last night and got a small portion of cheesy potatoes at Hy-Vee. The small portion did the trick and helped me satisfy a craving. I was surprised by how quickly my hunger was met.

I'm also excited about the progress being made at Jon's house. We did more work on his man-cave area. I've been bringing some items from my place to organize for a garage sale in the spring/summer. I will start bringing other things soon so the move is spread out over time. I'd hopefully need a smaller truck too in May. I'm glad that most of my storage is in totes. It makes it a lot easier to shove into vehicles and transport. I'm making about a once a week trip to Good Will too with donations. I'm trying to be realistic with what I'm selling at the garage sale. If am item is not worth much or I'm confident it probably won't sell, it just goes to Good Will.

Here are my goals for this week:

1) I will continue to eat breakfast each day. Yoplait Whips have really helped with this.

2) I need to devise a way to slowly add activity into my life. I'm looking at activities at home since I have an exercise ball and the treadmill. I may do some sort of circuit activity at work too since the gyms are empty quite often. The secretary walks in them frequently...why can't I do some activity in them too?

3)I need to be in bed before 11pm. I will allow myself to be in bed and reading. I keep getting sucked in my TV shows and such.

Weight Loss Update

Let's see if I can crack this blog entry out before I teach at 1:10pm. I usually take breaks when writing and it stretches out the completion process.

I would consider this week a success for weight loss. I've been using the Weight Watcher AP on my phone diligently and keeping track of my points. I have 49 to use each day and an extra 49 to use for the week. I've only used some of the extras and plan to use a lot of the extra points tonight at supper.

I've also made decent progress on my goals:

1) I will eat breakfast each week day. I don't teach on Mon-Thursday until 11am. I plan to be to work between 8:30-9:00am so I should have plenty of time to make an egg, eat some yogurt, or make some toast with jelly.

2) I will stock up my office with healthy snacks so I'm not famished when returning home each late afternoon.

3)I will attend a Weight Watchers meeting. Sorry but it has to be a goal. Something tells me I will be tired and less interested by the end of Monday but I must press on and get my booty to Main Street.

I ate breakfast every day but Monday. Gavin was ill Monday and it threw my morning off. I did have a late morning snack though at work. I've mainly been eating yogurt for breakfast. I can't handle eating a lot of food at that time of day. I attended a Weight Watchers meeting on Monday. I made a big trip to Wal-Mart and got a lot of food for my office. I bought fruit cups (in natural juices), applesauce, and those portable bowls and cups of soup from Campbell's.

I'm actually quite excited to weigh in on Monday. I'm also worried about next week. Next week is that "fun" ladies' week of the month and my hunger really gets nuts during that time. I especially crave salt during that week and find myself getting chips. I'm going to try and use popcorn to meet that craving. Or salt some apples.

I was very proud of myself last night. After teaching my CPR class, I ran to Taco John's to get Gavin some food since he's been hungry all the time lately. I did not buy anything for myself. He doesn't really care for the potato oles and in the past I've eaten those for him (with the super unhealthy nacho cheese). I only bought him his grilled stuffed taco and a drink. I tell you what though...it was a difficult ride home smelling that saturated fat. I made a homemade pizza when I got home. I can get buy making homemade pizzas since I don't put cheese on mine. The cheese usually makes the point value skyrocket.

I've done better not snacking at night too. Tuesday and Wednesday were difficult because I truly felt hungry at 9pm. I did have points left over and used some of my extras to have some cheese and crackers. I've decided that I love and hate cheese. It's great because it's helping to make up for my lack of milk consumption. I hate it because I could eat pieces of cheddar cheese all day. I need to start buying the smallest bricks of cheddar so I don't have a giant hunk of cheese staring at me every time I open the fridge.

I'm excited to have Monday off. I'm not sure if it will be spent in Ankeny or in Ames. Maybe both. I want to help Jon work on his basement but I also have some domestic duties to do at home. I tell you what...I'm anxious to not have to clean apartment building hallways. I cannot wait to stop doing that this summer.

Woohoo it's only 12:55pm! I still have 15 minutes before I teach :)

"If you fail to plan then plan on failing"

Hey all:

I attended a Weight Watcher's meeting. I will admit it was tough...I got really tired while standing in line. I'm pretty sure the place was breaking fire code too as it was packed. I was surprised by the number of men. I have seen them targeting the menfolk lately in commericals and online so apparently their campaign is working.

I really wasn't pleased with my weight. I'm not comfortable announcing it yet but my main goal is to drop about 7 lbs.

While sitting in the meeting, the leader kept mentioning the application for smart phones so I played with the two I already have in my phone. The calculator is nifty and much needed since protein, carbs, fat, and fiber all need to be factored in to get the point value for a food. I was a little frustrated because the leader kept saying those were the only nutrients in our diet. She must have forgotten vitamins, minerals, and water. Oh and fiber is a type of carbohydrate. Read a book people!

The other application is cool because I can track my points each day (I get 49 total). It also allows me to create meals and get an estimate on points. Hopefully haven't my phone with me all the time will help me track.

The theme for the meeting was planning. One woman admitted to cooking a month's worth a food and freezing the meals to help save time. I don't think I can go that far but I do need to set aside some time each night to prepare my lunch for work or even set out items for breakfast. They also discussed planning before eating out. I do typically look at menus prior to visiting a restaurant not always for health reasons but because I'm worried they won't have a meal I like.

It will be interesting to see how crowded the meetings remain as February approaches. I don't want people to drop out but it's going to naturally happen. The herd will thin itself out as motivations drop. I really don't want to be in the category of those that stop attending. I do not have any desire to buy the Weight Watcher's products. I've never enjoyed the food much even though the praline nutty bar free sample I was given was decent.

The leader ended the meeting with the quote in the title of this blog entry. She also included this one:

"You plan so you can bring the future into the present so you don't repeat the past."

What a Beautiful/Fall Day

Greetings:

It was a fun but quick weekend. I had considered doing some work-related tasks but I really didn't. I think the only work-related task I focused on was email. Saturday was fantastic because I slept better Friday night and slept in. I wasn't happy that I slept in so long because I didn't get all my domestic duties done. I do feel like I caught up with sleep though. I went back to having sleep issues Saturday night though. Jon got to experience how wired I get. I felt bad because it kept him up too because I couldn't be still.

Saturday also involved a lot of basketball. The ISU Women's team is now playing conference games and lost to Baylor. I don't remember the last time I saw the team lose a game in Ames. Gavin had his first game of the basketball season too. He's playing at a different site in Ames. He's played on the north side of Ames for all previous seasons. The south site is closer to our home and I arranged for him to be on a classmate's team for carpooling reasons. Usually practices conflict with Swim & Gym. The first game was sort of a blow out. Gavin and his friend certainly dominate but I'm also wondering if they are the only 6th graders on the team.

Today's blog will be lacking a picture. I had meant to take a picture of the potatoes I made for our church potluck. I ran out of time though so the dish didn't get a photo shoot. I made "Firehouse Potatoes". Jon actually passed the recipe onto me last year. It was created a by a firefighter that does the cooking for a firehouse. It looked so pretty this morning and tasted wonderful. It's not a conducive recipe for losing weight by any means but if you need a fail-safe recipe for a gathering....it works!

Firehouse Potatoes

Ingredients:
7-9 potatoes (all depends on their size...recipe recommends medium sized potatoes)
1 can of Campbell's cheddar cheese soup
Sour Cream (I believe the recipe asks for 1/2 cup)
Butter (3/4 to 1 stick)
Scallions
Bacon (optional)

Potato Process:

1) Peel and boil potatoes. Drain from the water like typical mashed potatoes. Add butter to the potatoes and mash. Do not add milk or any liquid. You need the potatoes to be as stiff as possible.

2) In a separate bowl, mix together the soup and sour cream so they are evenly blended.

3) Add soup/sour cream mixture to mashed potatoes. This is why you want the potatoes as stiff as possible. The soup/sour cream makes the potatoes very creamy and you don't want the soupy effect to kick in.

4) Place cheesy concoction into a casserole dish and place in the oven at 350 degrees for 30+ minutes. I watch the top of the potatoes to see how nicely they are browning.

5) After the casserole is nicely baked, add chopped scallions to the top of the casserole. You can also chop up crisp bacon and sprinkle on top too.

On a different note, my mental health started off on the right foot. I was feeling pretty down toward the end of the semester and even spoke to a doctor. I've felt pretty darn normal so far this year (other than the sleeping issues). I'm hoping that stays the same as the semester starts tomorrow. I really don't want to pop a pill to feel better or to sleep better. I actually did more research on Lunesta and Ambien and hell no. Based on my tendency to not sleep well already, I don't need any of those adverse reactions to show up too.

I'm sure I'll have some praises and some complaints to share as the semester starts this week. I still need to do more updating and editing with my DMACC materials. I think I do like the new book I'm using...it reduces the number of chapters I have to cram in before the end of April.

Hopefully you saw my Facebook status....I got to rake leaves today! It really felt like October. Weird!

T-Minus 2 days

Greetings:

It's almost 2am and here I am awake. It's been a common occurence this week. I should be exhausted. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep last night. I've actually gotten 2-3 hours of sleep each night this week. I've not been napping during the day either. Well wait...I've dozed a bit when watching TV on some evenings. I cannot figure out why my body and mind won't just give in and let me slumber. I've tried some "tricks" and tactics too. Decaffienated camomile tea--didn't work. Some glasses of wine--didn't work. Making myself lie in bed and not get up when I stay awake...I laid in bed for hours listening to the traffic and weird noises in my building. I do have sleeping aids (Hy-Vee brand) and it knocked me out. I felt weird and too sluggish the next day--no good. I've been told to consider my stress level but to be honest...I feel very prepared for the semester and am excited to dive into my classes next week. Blah! Something needs to give though or I'm going to have some sort of fatigued-driven break down.

I've decided to include more pictures in my blog entries. My mom let me take home the poinsetta the family bought in rememberance of deceased family members from the Smith side. It's still alive, it's still red, and it's thriving! Happy day. I'm pleased that all my vegetation is alive in the apartment. I need to repot everything though...I've put that off for months.

I watched "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" tonight since we got it through Netflix. I had not seen the movie in years and it was odd watching Johnny Depp, Leo DiCaprio, and Juliette Lewis when they were so young. I need to keep finding gems like that on Netflix.

I'm going to Weight Watchers next week. Part of me is cringing because of how busy it will be due to the start of the new year. But I need to start weighing in at least weekly to back in the swing of things. Nicole...you were waiting until the end of a month to weigh yourself last year...did that work for the best? I can't remember if you blogged about it. Thanks to my indulgence in junk foods, I'm not really craving anyting "bad" for me. Here are my weight loss goals for next week:

1) I will eat breakfast each week day. I don't teach on Mon-Thursday until 11am. I plan to be to work between 8:30-9:00am so I should have plenty of time to make an egg, eat some yogurt, or make some toast with jelly.

2) I will stock up my office with healthy snacks so I'm not famished when returning home each late afternoon.

3)I will attend a Weight Watchers meeting. Sorry but it has to be a goal. Something tells me I will be tired and less interested by the end of Monday but I must press on and get my booty to Main Street.

I'm pleased to reveal that I'm reading for pleasure again. I started the sequel to "Gone with the Wind". It's called "Scarlet". I was worried about being disappointed but it's been decent for the first 100 pages. The author has done a great job relaying the emotional anguish of the main character. I've been reading when I can't sleep and I hope to finish the book this week. Not sure what I'll read next.

That's enough for now....

Coolness

So I love "The Neverending Story". I prefer the first one over the second one. I think there is even a third too but I refuse to watch it.

I don't own a tablet but if I did, I would buy this cover for it.

Falcore!!!!! (not even sure that spelling is close or correct)

Happy New Year!!!

First blog of the year! Wahoo! I've actually been attempting to blog for days but never completed an entry. I'm going to revamp as to include some resolution chit-chat.

My New Year's Eve was tame and low key. I'm grateful for that. Gavin had the opportunity to have a sleepover so I'm glad he was able to have a fun night. I should probably start accepting that he'll not spend NYE at home with his mother.

I'm pleased that Nicole got the ball rolling with resolution discussion in her blog. I've thought a lot about my resolutions all during December. Like most years, I'm excited to make some changes. The thing is....I need that excitement to stick around through December 2012. Here is a list of changes I would like to make (in no particular order):

1. Lose weight in a progressive yet sustainable manner
2. Increase my minutes of activity each week so I participate in more moderate-to-vigorous activities
3. Make moderate changes to my body fat (screw BMI I hate that measurement)
4. Read more for pleasure (I've been in a slump lately)
5. Work more on my faith through reading (see above) and service at the church
6. Save more money so there is always a suitable "cushion" in my account
7. Continue to make preparations to hopefully move in with Jon (been sorting and donating items for Good Will and a garage sale)
8. Take more time for myself on a regular basis
9. Sleep better consistently
10. Wake up earier without it feeling like agony

As I stated above, I haven't been reading anything for pleasure. I have two books to read that a friend lent me. They are both relgious in nature. I've gotten through a portion of "One Thousand Gifts" and haven't opened "Is Heaven for Real?" Jon's mom also lent me the book written after "Gone with the Wind". The back sounds intriguing so I'm hoping it's as good as the original classic.

I had been missing a pair of Lane Bryant jeans for weeks (maybe longer). I had no idea where the heck they went. I searched everywhere here and Jon looked at his place. I was pissed because they weren't cheap (nothing at Lane Bryant is) and they are fabulous jeans. I found them tonight on Jon's Good Will pile in his office. Whew! Happy day.

I'm actually anxious (in a good way) for the new semester to start. I plan to start some prep work this week and get my syallbi finalized. I do have some anxiety building about the stupid audit. Blah. I wish I could just shrug that off and not let it bother me so much. I already have to start preparing for the next session of that summer program. Yippee! (not really)

More about the weight loss. I have the reasoning running through my head constantly. I seem to have more and more reasons pop in my head each day based on how I feel and what I see. Here are a few:

--I really don't like how I look lately (especially in recent pictures involving popcorn balls

--I've been sorting through clothes and have so many jeans and cute tops that I can't wear because they're too tight...if I lost weight, I wouldn't have to buy clothes for a long time.

--My energy is low. I know my weight is affecting the quality of my sleep.

--I'm still worried about my bloodsugar and movement towards becoming diabetic. I'd like to avoid all that.

--My back has been OK but I know weight loss will help prevent anymore lower back pain.

--I want to be able to work out with Gavin as he pursues athletic endeavors in middle school and high school

I think that's enough for now. I should make regular blogging a resolution too. :)
